Vista going to sleep

I have a new computer which has Vista Home Premium installed.
If I leave the computer for an hour or so, sometimes I only have to move the mouse for the computer to wake up and I can use it again.
On other ocassions when I return the machine won't wake up and as I have no reset button on this machine I have to hit the start button to shut down. Then start up again from scratch.
Windows then tells me that I haven't shut down properly which of course is true!

I know I can alter the period after which the computer goes to sleep but it is the 'not waking up' that is the problem.

Is this a fault in Vista or is it just my machine bought from Evesham micros UK

Thank you

Gillian

Widows Vista Home Premium, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400@2.13GHz,
2.00 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS (Microsoft Corp - WDDM)

Thank you for that information.
I now have some reading to do.
'Vista is still a very young OS..'. Unfortunately I'm 73 and on a steep learning curve.
