Hello.

Thank you first for reading my post and possibly replying.

I had 1GB(2x512) of 633mhz ram(bought 533mhz,but system and all possibly software tells me 633mhz)
And i decided to buy more memory on EBAY. Bought 2GB(1x2gb) of 633mhz from memoryman for a very good price, but after putting memory in in benchmark and Oblivion didn't see any results of better speed at all !!!
Tried to leave just one module of 2GB in case if they don't work properly still same results.
In the end having 1GB is the same speed as 2GB !!!
Was on the site where bought my PC and checked motherboard they say it does support 533mhz and 633mhz.Maybe i need to switch something on ?

Please guys any suggestions will be helpful

Thank you

Hi dark-union and welcome to Tech Forums

Can you please post the exact part no of your original Ram and the part no of the new Ram as there are different sorts of ram yet of the same speed and pin "eg" single and double. Links would be very helpful and to your Motherboard. one more thing can you please install the original 1GB(2x512) and run this scanner > Crucial Scanner the scanner will tell you exactly what your systems ram is and what you can upgrade to, please post back the results then members or myself can advise you, thank you

Hello again
Thank you for your reply and hope my info will be usefull.

All info I'm taking from using CPU-Z software which seems to be good enough.

Original memory modules are 2x 512mb (on the module there is a sticker "Elixir") but CPU-Z tells me it's manufacturer is "Nanya Technology)
Part number: M2Y51264TU88B4B-3C
Serial Number: EF6534C1
Both PC2-5300 (333MHz)

New Module 1x2GB Pc2 5300 667MHz on the module says "Nanya"
Part Number: NT2GT64U8HB0JY-3C
Serial: E4393F11

Motherboard Manufacturer: ASUSTeK Computer INC.
Motherboard Model: P5B-TMX-GB-SI

Cruicial Scan:

Scan Id: 98FEFB6031D926C3
graphics card upgrades
We currently do not carry any guaranteed-compatible graphics cards for your PCI Express graphics slot.

Your Computer Specifications

Slots :512 MB 512 MB
Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096 MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1024 MB
Available Memory Slots: N.A.
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: N.A.
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz Model 6, Stepping 4
CPU Speed: 3000 MHz

Cannot perform action where they can tell me about upgrade as I cannot find my model

And again you said: "as there are different sorts of ram yet of the same speed and pin "eg" single and double"
But I tried running just one module of 1x 2GB and results in benchmark and FPS in Oblivion are still the same.Looks like these 2GB working as 1GB
Just in case you want to ask my video card is:
GForce 7600 GS 256 DDR2 HDR
Also tried lower virtual memory settings and tried but couldn't find latency setting for RAM in BIOS.(Someone advise me to lower Latency)
BIOS is American Megatrends
Version 0301

Thank you so much to your response and hope you could help me.

Best regards.

Hi dark-union "sorry for the wait"

I have found your ram - 240 pin Unbuffered DDR2 SDRAM dual in line, the new Ram you got must match or it wont work right, i have found a PDF Doc for your Ram so please click the link and its the second down on the web page, download the PDF Doc and save, if i was you i would return the new ram you bought and buy exactly the same spec ram that you originally had but in 2GB 1GB x2 kit as these are a matched pair.

Link to PDF Doc > Here

Thank you again for your answer.

Unfortunately I’m not very strong in memory questions but if I want to use just one module of 2GB so I shouldn't have problems with "matched pair" thing
I mean "throw" 2x512mb in the bin and just use 1x2GB
If there a chance ask you to explain a little bit about
1)matched pair ? what is it
2)Buffered and unbuffred
And finally if I still need to exchange my memory what will be best genuine reason to send it back so they won't have any arguing with me. Maybe i should exaggerate a little bit about some thing ? Considering I bought it from EBAY

Thanks

I would not bin the 2x512mb you could sell it !

1)matched pair,

This is a pair of ram sticks that will have been tested together at the same time on a DDR2 motherboard and run in sync, you don't have to pair them but you might get a performance boost from having matched pairs, an overclockers favourite.

2)Buffered and unbuffered

Buffered ram is for servers, and unbuffered ram is for normal desktop pc's, a basic description of it would be that buffered has additional circuits to improve signal strength. It only becomes really useful when you start dealing with a lot of ram or if the chips are spaced out a bunch. Hence it's usually seen with servers because those are the only systems typically using more than say 2-4 memory sticks. It runs at slightly reduced speeds (unless you change the timings) compared to unbuffered memory and is slightly more expensive.

As for ebay just tell them its not compatible

Fizzkit Thanks you help with terminology.

But you didn't tell me will I have problems if I'll use just one stick of 2GB
Or there should be some kind of compatibility with motherboard ?
As I said before I used only one module at the same time but performance was the same as using 1GB
And another thing if you won't mind What about updating drivers for BIOS ? Will it help to boost the speed of the system ?

Thanks and sorry for being a pest
