This game is definately one of the best action adventure/horror games to come out since the first Resident Evil. The reason I'm discussing it is because I don't feel that a lot of people recognized this game, and I feel that this game deserves your attention.
You play a man named Torque. He was arrested and sent to a prison island off the coasy of Maryland for the murder of his family. The only thing is that Torque, or "T" as he was called by his wife, doesn't remember any of it but feels that he was set up. The island has a long and troubed history dating back to slavery times.
Upon arriving a cataclysm occurs and monsters appear. These monsters aren't just random beings. They're subjects of the "accidents", experiments, and torture that has plagued the island for years. It's now your chance to escape this Hell on Earth while at the same time trying to uncover the mystery of your family's death.
You'll encounter other inmates and prison guards. This is when the game gets interesting. You have the choice to either save them or let them die, or even kill them yourself. And the best part is that your decision effects the story's outcome, so the game isn't as linear as you might think and it offers tons of replay value.
The music is well done an provides a spooky ambiance which will make you love and hate to play this game at night. You'll walk through a corridor and suddenly hear whispers, screams, and the ghostly banter of your deceased family.
A quick documentary of Alcatraz also lets you get into the mood before playing the game, or you could choose to watch it afterwards. There's a bio for every monster and ghost you encounter which allows you to become further engulfed in the story. The graphics are well done for each platform (PS2, XBox, and PC), but the game's utter fear factor is what sells it.
Whether you're a fan of survival horror, action, or you just love good story telling, you'll love this game. I hail it as the best third-person action game to have come out in the past decade and once you try it you'll see why.
My Rating: 9/10
Final Note: If you haven't tried this game, it's definately wirth your time. So please, support a sleeper hit! It's called The Suffering, go pick it up or rent it. You won't be sorry.
