Hi everyone , first of all i must apologise if this is posted in the incorrect area , but im kinda new to all this lol

the problem i have is , my uncle is having a few problems with his pc , when trying to get on dial up internet there is a click from the modem , then a 5 second gap , another click then this error message ..... "opening port , error 680 : there was no dial tone" . After looking around here and there and checking that all cables are present and correct , i came across a yellow question mark beside the modem and com3 in the device manager thingy lol id be really grateful if anyone could maybe highlight a problem and give me a quick fire remedy? hope your all well , mark .

ps. its xp and pc is packard bell imedia.

pps. the modem and cable worked fine on my own pc lol

It could be that the drivers are not setup properly to allow the computer to communicate with the modem, if you know the make and model of the modem go to the manufactur's website and download the latest drivers and install them directly on the problem machine, this should sort the problem out. Also if this does not work change the PCI slot that it is currently in as i have found this has solved a few problems in the past even though in reality it isnt meant to.

Post back and let us know if you managed to get any further

Hi
when you installed the modem and drivers did you put the area code in for dialing? also have you tried changing the setting to pulse dial instead of tone dial.

Hi Mark

Yep you can try comm port 2 if you can come back to me on what you have tried that would be helpfull. if you have unistalled the drivers for the modem then try changing the pci slot, then re install the drivers, if it gives you the choice manuallly change it to com port 2 or port 4.
